With my book objects, I want to give visibility to the invisible. The traditional book is determined as a vehicle of words and language. In the context of message and narrative, information is conveyed that is mentally and individually converted into images in the brain. The pictures in a picture book serve the story, illustrating it and giving it atmospheric support. My book cassettes are far removed from these implemented aims. They have their origin more in the early scientific forms of collection, like herbaria and collectors’ albums, in the religious veneration of objects in the form of relicts, and in the trivial rituals of exchanging thoughts in albums of verse. Things are what they are, and the human being gives them their meaning, names, and concepts. By delving into the relief-like structures and the presentation of things in the book cassettes, the viewer reveals his own viewpoint, entirely individual values, associations, and life story. Each viewing makes him a co-creator of an interpretation and new content, if he has the capacity to pay attention and to open himself up to the piece. The stories he finds are his own stories! The enigma of these “books” is also his enigma. Michael Schulze
