With the BAFTA awards being handed out this weekend and Oscars coming soon, we thought it’d be a good idea to discuss one of the big successes of 2013 – 12 Years a Slave. The movie won ‘Best Film’ at the BAFTAs this Sunday, a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Drama, and has no less than nine Academy Award nominations. Chiwetel Ejiofor also took home the Best Actor award at the BAFTAs for his roles as Solomon Northup, beating out fellow actors like Leonardo di Caprio and Tom Hanks. Surprisingly or not, this British actor with Nigerian roots is this year’s hit, and many are betting on his first Oscar for Solomon Northup. Let’s take a look at the movie synopsis and trailer and make a prediction for ourselves. Will he beat Matthew McConaughey for Best Actor, and will 12 Years a Slave take home the Best Picture trophy over the blockbuster sci-fi Gravity? Let us know what you think! Synopsis (Yahoo Movies): In the pre-Civil War United States, Solomon Northup, a free black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery. Facing cruelty at the hands of a malevolent slave owner, as well as unexpected kindnesses, Solomon struggles not only to stay alive, but to retain his dignity. In the twelfth year of his unforgettable odyssey, Solomons chance meeting with a Canadian abolitionist will forever alter his life.
