With the passage of 55 years this month since the debut of his quintessential Twilight Zone television series, theres no better time to appreciate creator and principal writer Rod Serlings feisty response to interviewer Mike Wallace. Aired in 1959 a short time before TZs debut, Wallace accuses Rod point-blank of selling out to make his new series, forsaking more important work for the sake of Hollywood money. (View the video from the 10:14 mark.) Its hard for us to appreciate what television programming was like before TZ. We know today just how pivotal this series became and all the new talents and genres it produced in its wake (Star Trek and even todays Breaking Bad claim direct influence, to name just two series). These fascinating few minutes provide a snapshot of how things were in 1959: product sponsors and Washington DC politicians actually had as much editorial power on TV as the writers and producers did. Of course, that was then and now is now, right? They dont come any more eloquent and concerned with human beings than Rod. With Anne Serling and Rod Serling Books
