With today being the 50th Anniversary of the signing of the Civil - TopicsExpress

With today being the 50th Anniversary of the signing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the inner policy-Geek in me had to share some points. Did you know? 1- Emmanuel Cellar (D), Chair of the House Judiciary Committee, was very instrumental in getting the Bill through the House (even after Kennedys assasination). Cellar represented the NY-10 (most of Brooklyn in 1964). 2- The votes in the House or the Senate were never a Partisan vote. I continue to stand in awe to the Southern Democrats and Republicans that were brave enough to stand up and be counted in Voice Roll Calls for my liberties. 3- March 26, 1964: The only public meeting between Martin L. King, Jr. and Malcolm X, as they attended the Capitol to hear Senate debates on the Bill. 4- Title VI continues to be referenced in many federal lawsuits and Consent Decrees. In a nut shell it says that no entity that receives federal funding shall discriminate on the grounds of race...(thats why its important to read through the Fed Budget with a magnifying glass and know where those pennies land). BTW, my Masters Thesis is on Title VI....its a nice long read... Go read the Legislation...just google it....
