Working on so many varying medical malpractice cases, we learn a lot about so many different areas of medicine. It also heightens our awareness about many issues as well, which is why we want to share them with you. Today, I want to share all I learned about colonoscopies. First, you need to go to a reputable gastroenterologist and you should have your colonoscopy done in a hospital, if at all possible, and NOT a surgery center. This way if there is any concern or complication, which is more common than you think, they can address it immediately, as opposed to calling an ambulance, trying to stabilize you and then having you DRIVEN to a hospital for help! ALWAYS GET A COPY OF YOUR REPORT! Read it! Ask questions if necessary. Not ALL polyps are benign. Some are pre-cancerous and very concerning. If you have one of these, your time frame for follow up colonoscopies is DIFFERENT than the average person. It also makes you more at risk for developing colon cancer! See how the prep was on that report. The dr. will categorize it. fair poor etc If it is not GOOD - then you need to understand that your colonoscopy was anything BUT thorough, complete or as accurate as possible. Often times a repeat colonoscopy should be done if the bowel was not clean enough. Sadly, that doesnt always happen and concerning polyps or cancers are missed! Step in and ask about your health. Dont leave this to fall through the cracks because someone was too busy to address it with you. Some people need special preps or 2 day preps or even barium enemas to get accurate colonoscopies done. Dont settle for anything but as best as possible. I watched a poor woman suffer for years with complaints, told all of her colonoscopies were NEGATIVE. Finally, she gets to a different dr. who diagnoses a HUGE tumor in her colon, which was clearly there all along! Going back and looking at the reports from the past tests - prep was POOR. There was too much stool many times so the dr did not even go as far as he should have with the scope because he couldnt see clearly etc. She had no idea. This is how a tumor stayed hidden and grew to then metastasize to her liver and ultimately take her life too soon. Wasnt like she wasnt going to the dr. and trying to get a diagnosis of her issues! Had she gotten the reports, asked more questions, and/or gone to another dr. sooner, maybe the story would not have ended this way.
