Working to tackle ASB in Northumberland As the Northumbria Police anti-social behaviour campaign ‘Report it to sort it’ continues, police in Morpeth have helped solve a number of issues distressing residents. And the positive response has been welcomed by Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner Vera Baird. In the town a couple were given an injunction preventing them from entering a housing complex after they targeted a man living there. The man and woman encouraged the man to drink to excess and took financial advantage of him. Reports were made to the police and the housing provider, Isos Housing, who identified the couple who had also been causing a nuisance and disturbance in the quiet residential area. Morpeth’s Neighbourhood Policing Team worked with the man’s care worker and Isos Housing to gather evidence to apply for an injunction against the couple. A power of arrest exists for breach of the injunction. Inspector Dave Simpson said: “We take all reports of anti-social behaviour seriously and will fully investigate the circumstances and take the appropriate action. “ASB affects people’s quality of life and can mean different things to different people but we will always look to work with partners to solve these issues.” A village shop owner who experienced problems in and around his property was also helped by his local Neighbourhood Beat Manager. Morpeth neighbourhood officer PC Paul Dent attended a call to the shop where he identified the youths involved in the disorder. He then spoke to them all in front of their parents. Two of the youths had previously been warned in relation to their behaviour at the shop two months earlier. Neighbourhood Inspector Dave Simpson said: “PC Dent has been working with Community Safety to address the behaviour of all three youths involved in the disorder, updating the shop owner with what has been done. “He is very happy with the outcome and there have not been any further incidents reported at the shop since.” PCC Vera Baird said: "These are exactly the kind of anti-social behaviour problems people can face in their communities which can severely affact their quality of life. "It is positive to see police and partners working together to take strong action against those responsible. I hope this encourages more people to come forward and report anti-social behaviour in their neighbourhoods."
