Working together to protect against fire The Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI) is working with SP Ausnet and VicRoads to clear vegetation and hazardous trees from power easements along the Princes Highway between Orbost and Cann River and along the Sydenham Inlet Road. These collaborative fire protection works will improve community safety, help maintain critical power infrastructure in the area and will also improve road safety in the event of major storms. Starting on Wednesday December 11, the first works will be at Manorina, from the Princes Highway intersection with the Sydenham Inlet Road, south to the power easement. Up to six metres of regenerating eucalypt which is encroaching on the powerline will be cleared along a 200 metre stretch in front of the houses at Manorina. The remainder of the power easement will have any hazardous trees removed. Power will be shut down to the Manorina community between 9.00am and 3.30pm on December 11 while the works are undertaken. On Thursday December 12, more clearing work will begin over a four kilometre stretch from Sydenham Inlet road west along the Princes Highway to where the power easement crosses the highway. This will complete a safe working platform for planned burning from Manorina right through to the Conran - Cabbage Tree Road intersection on the southern side of the Princes Highway. DEPI crews will continue to work along the highway between the Cabbage Tree – Conran Road and the Sydenham Inlet Road for a few days to complete the works and ensure the safety of road users and residents.
