Worthington’s Sponsored Merthyr & District Darts League 2103/14 Season. Baili “B” Off To A Flyer In Season Opener. The opening league games of the Worthington’s Sponsored Merthyr & District Darts League for the 2013/14 Season produced some excellent fare with big wins, high scoring, high finishing, high tension and high drama as the players stretched their tungsten triceps with the teams trying to head the early league positions and make their intentions known. Division One. Baili-Glas Inn “B” 8 v Troedyrhiw Ex Club 1. Last season the Baili “B” fluffed their lines and failed to land the league title and after a summer of plotting another assault on the championship they laid down a marker to the rest of the sides in the division with an emphatic 8-1 win over their visitors , the newly promoted Troedyrhiw Ex Club. Tony Galliers 100,120 & Ron Davies were charged with starting life in the top bracket for the Ex but they found it tough going as the Baili’s Mork & Mindy Matthew Quinlan 100,140 & Geraint Thomas started their season off to a flyer with a crushing 20 dart leg against the darts and the second pairs game saw galacticos Andrew Rough 140 & Graham Hughes 100 hit a 21 dart leg with throw to out the home side 2-0 up beating Glen Kitchen & D, James 100. Tony Hedges & G. Butler fared no better in the last pairs leg as Jeff Pearce & Steve Haman 140 apiece took the game in 24 darts to put the hosts 3-0 ahead going into the singles. Nothing surprises you in the game of darts and it was no surprise when Tony Galliers 125,138,140 took the first singles leg with a 2-1 victory over Geraint Thomas 100,137,70 out to get the away side into the game but the next match up saw Matthew Quinlan 140, in a 17 dart leg, beat D. James 100 to get the Baili back on the winning track. A match that saw a total of 38 ton-plus scores including 1x180 continued in the third singles with Graham Hughes 2x100,180 beating Glen Kitchen 2x100,140 in a closely fought game as the hosts went 5-1 up. Troedyrhiw’s Tony Hedges ran into an in form Jeff Pearce 2x100,125,140 in singles game four and Ron Davies 140 found it just as tough in the next leg with Steve Haman hitting 3x100,134,140 to make it 7-1. G. Butler recorded a 100 in the final game but this was no match against the firepower of Andrew Rough 2x100,133,2x140 who hit legs of 14 & 18 darts to make the final score 8-1 to the home side to get the Baili’s set off to a great start. Merthyr Labour Club 6 v Lord Raglan “B” 3. This was cracking game from start to finish and included a total of 47 ton-plus scores including 1x180. The home side started very brightly with Ron Morgan 100,140 & Anthony Carstairs 100 taking the first pairs over Des Kendry & Thomas Thomas against the throw. Gavin Nicholls 140 & G. Hughes put in a brave show against Jason Baynham 2x100 & Chris Galleozzie 125 in the second pairs but could not stop the Labour Club going 2-0 and then Wayne Davies & Gareth Dunn 100 made it a clean sweep of the pairs in beating old stagers Brian Roberts & Brian Meek 2x100. The Labour Club are defending Champions and much of their success was built on the form and consistency of Wayne Davies 3x100 but this time out he was second best as Des Kendry 100,140 pulled a leg back for the visitors. G. Hughes 100,140 pulled a rabbit out of the hat for the Lord in the second singles with a shock victory over Gareth Dunn 5x100 as the visitors pulled back to within a point. Anthony Carstairs 2x100140, 180 steadied the ship for the Champions with victory over Gavin Nicholls 100,125 in the next game to put the hosts 4-2 up and in a hard fought seventh match up Ron Morgan 2x100,140 made it 5-2 with victory over Brian Roberts 100,140. 4x100 helped Chris Galleozzie beat Thomas Thomas 100 to further increase the home sides advantage but there was some cheer for the Lord in the final game as evergreen Brian Meek 4x100,140 edged past Jason Baynham 5x100 to earn them a third valuable point. Guest Keen Bowls Club “A” 3 v Horse & Groom 6. The Guest “A” have enjoyed successive promotions since joining the league and starting life in division five and their first game in the top bracket saw them on home soil facing the newly formed Horse & Groom who featured some big hitters in the form of erm, err, well you decide for yourselves. Phil Williams & Brian Nicholas 100 apiece got the Horse off and running taking the opening pairs over Lee Nicholas & Mike Martin 125 and 2-0 soon followed curtsey of Steve Nicholas 100 & Steve Colvin who beat Teg Powell 100,135 & C. Newly crowned Summer League Singles Champion Phil Williams 4x100,125,100 out made it 4-0 with a fine win over Mike Martin 3x100 in the first singles match but the Guest finally got into the match in the second singles with Lee Nicholas 2x100, 120,180 ousting Brian Nicholas. Warrior of many a long campaign Mark Virgin 100,123,125,2x140 then beat Steve Nicholas 100,140 to pull another leg back for the hosts and it was game on with two points separating the sides. Gary Hughes 2x100 edged past Teg Powell to put the visitors 5-2 up but the Guest refused to buckle with Wayne Benbow playing a captains roll to beat S. Beale and pull a third leg back for the home side. The final match up saw Steve Colvin in fine form to score a 2-0 win over C. Powell and secure a fine 6-3 win for the Horse. Grawen Arms 6 v Mount Pleasant Inn 3. The Grawen have undergone something of a team rebuilding for this season and started their campaign with a potential banana skin against the visiting and dangerous Mount Pleasant Inn. Scott Bayliss 99,100 (making his Grawen debut) & Dean Smith made a solid start to the season putting the home side ahead with victory over Karl Manns & Barrie Bates and 2-0 then followed with Darren Locke 100 & another debutant Steve Smith 81,55 out getting the better of Dai Phelps & Neil Baldwin 100. The first singles was a great game which saw Scott Bayliss 2x100,2x125,131 in fine form scoring a tremendous 2-1 win over the vastly experienced Karl Manns 2x81, 84,85,100 to make it 4-0. This contest contained some 38 ton-plus scores with 1x180 and the high scores continued in the next game with Phil Locke 100,2x140,180 showing all his qualities to beat Dai Phelps 3x100 by a 2-1 score and make it 5-0 to the home side. Heolgerrig Club 4 v Merthyr Football Club “Sea Side” C 5. The team formerly known as the Dowlais Labour “A” travelled to the Heolgerrig Club hoping to put last season’s disappointing campaign behind them but found themselves in a very tough battle that could have gone either way and suggested another trying season ahead of them. Ray Williams 140 & Iory Haines took the opening pairs against the darts beating Craig Morgan & Paul Thomas and then the ever dependable Colin Morgan & Meirion Evans doubled the lead with a winning double against Jamie Evans & Kerry Morgan. The “A” team of Dale Pinch & Justin Davies then shook the visitors into life with a fine win over “Trad” Davies & Alan Moore 100,119 in the final pairs to trail by one point going into the vital singles legs. Colin Morgan 4x100 beat Jamie Davies (2-1) in the first singles to increase the hosts lead to 3-1 but then the visitors sparked into life producing an amazing fight back. The last game saw Trad Davies notch up a 116 but it was to no avail as Owain Davies took the point 2-0 and with it the match 5-4 to get the visitors season off to a somewhat stuttering start. Division Two. Dowlais Con Club 4 v Martyrs Club 7. Newly promoted Dowlais Con faced a tough introduction to life in division two when they faced the visiting Martyrs Club. New recruits Keith Evans, John Sales 100 & Alun Pearce got the visitors off to a winning start taking the opening triples with throw despite a 100 from Steve Davies for the home side and then the Martyrs went 2-0 up through S.Evans, Ray Phillips & B. Mike Griffiths 100 and Steve Davies then scored two points for the Con with wins over C. Howe 140 and Matthew Phillips respectively to pull back to trail by just a single point but the away side then rallied through J. Harnedy and B. Howe 100 apiece with wins over Jimmy Winstone and George Quirke 100 to take the match 7-4 and start their season in fine style. Merthyr Rugby Club “A” 7 v Merthyr Rugby Club “B” 4. After their quick trip through the lounge, hall and bar Merthyr Rugby “B” arrived to face their “A” team in this normally fiercely fought derby and gave a good account of themselves without getting the result they wanted. The “home” side took the opening triples against the throw with the experienced trio of Phil John, John Wood & Daniel Payne finding the target and with their teammates holding throw in the second game they quickly established a 2-0 lead. Mervyn Hughes & Chris Stansfield showed their class in the first of the pairs legs holding throw to beat Daniel Payne & Kerry Green to get into the match but the home side were quick to respond with the pairings of John Wood/Lyn Jones & Roy Element/Phil John showing their scoring prowess to take a 4-1 lead. Phil John won his third game of the night with victory over Chris Stansfield in the first singles contest but Mervyn Hughes held his nerve to pull the next point back with a great win over John Wood. Evergreen Kerry Green then put the stamp on Colin Lloyd as he made it 6-2 to the home side before Les Thomas added another to their total beating Jonathon Davies. Ron Phillips and Ian Evans then took the last two legs for the visitors with victories over Roy Element and Lyn Jones. Aberfan Social Club “A” 5 v Baili-Glas Inn “A” 6. Charles Davies then levelled the match with a gruelling win over Alan Mee 140 and this match was in the balance. Drew Bradley held his nerve and throw to beat Warren Rees to edge the Baili nearer to victory but it was all square after the tenth leg with Ken Davies 100 beating Terry Morgan 2x100 after the later narrowly missed the bull for a 122 finish hitting the 25 segment. The last and deciding leg had Kevin Downing in action for the home side but an all our yesterdays show from Nigel Meek 100 saw the Baili win this battle to get their season off to a winning start. Merthyr Ex Club 5 v Morlais Tavern “A” 6. This was another tense hard fought battle that went right to the wire before a winner was announced. Both triples legs went with the throw with Shane Williams 100 impressing for the home side in the second game. Andrew Davies 140 & Matt Sullivan broke throw in the first pairs putting the home side ahead for the first time but this was short lived as Nigel Bees & Jason Gillespie 140 levelled at 2-2 but then the Morlais regained the lead with George Scott 140 & Ian Thomas 100 putting them 3-2 up going into the match deciding singles. Morlais magician Martin Bayliss 100 made it 4-2 with victory over Mark Nicholls 2x100 with George Scott then edging past Matthew Sullivan 140 to make it 5-2. Denzil Griffiths 100 started an Ex revival in beating Andrew Norbury followed by John Hobby getting the better of Gareth Giles. Andrew Davies with a splendid 108 out beat Nigel Bees to level the contest at five apiece leaving the match to be decided between Wayne Jones for the Ex and Ian Thomas for the Tavern and in a hard fought game Wayne hit 100 for the home side but with the aid of 140 Ian took the leg and the match for the away side. Division Three. Merthyr Football Club “A” 4 v Colliers Arms 7. The Colliers started the match very brightly taking the two triples legs with D. Lewis 121 impressing for the visitors in the first leg with J. Gullick 140 replying for the home side in the second. John Jones & Trevor Lewis edged past Joanne Mew & L. Vic Jones and Jack Colston took the first two singles for the away side to pull them to within a point but the home side responded through J. Tarr 2x100 and G. Robertson 100,116 to go 6-3 ahead with the last two legs going to Aberfan through the resilient Des Collins and G. Jones 101. Division Four. Farmers Arms “A” 8 v Farmers Arms “B” 3. This score line does not give a true reflection of the game with the “B” side deserving of a few more points but for some wayward finishing on the doubles. The “visitors” started extremely well taking both triples with Dean Moulds 100,140 most impressive in the first game for them and B. Evans & Neil Roberts finding a ton apiece in the second. Wayne Morgan 100,140 & Gary Price 140 took the first pairs for the home side against the throw to get their side into the game and in the second pairs multiple missed doubles by Dean Moulds & Stewart Charleston 140 apiece cost them dear as Dai Jones 100 & Mike Terrett stole the leg for the “A” side to level the match at 2-2. Rhian Evans & Aled Walters then broke throw to beat T. Davies & N. Willis to put the home side ahead for the first time ahead of the singles. Wayne Morgan 140 was the victor in the first singles beating T. Davies to advance the score to 4-2 in the hosts favour and more points where added with wins for Dai Jones 140 and Gary Price 100,138 over Dean Moulds 100 and B. Evans, Keith Westcott pulled a fourth leg back for the away team but this proved to be their last point as Aled Walters and Mike Terrett took the last two legs for the hosts benefiting from some woeful finishing from their opponents. Dynevor Arms 5 v VNU 6. Newly promoted Dynevor gave a good account of themselves on their debut in division four narrowly losing out to their much more experienced opponents. The VNU took both triples legs and then added the first pairs through Mark Hadley & Craig Berrington to lead 3-0. Kerry Lloyd & S. Barnett took the second pairs against the experienced Steve Darlow & K. Howe to get the Dyn into the game and they pulled a second point back through the excellent Phil Lewis 115 out & Eddie Jones in the last pairs game to trail by one going into the singles. Old stager Steve Darlow kept his cool in the first singles to increase the visitors lead and further wins for Mark Hadley and Eddie Cunnington over S. Barnett and B. Edmunds saw the VNU go 6-2 ahead. To their great credit the home side refused to crumble and fine displays from Kerry Lloyd, J. Lewis and Phil Lewis saw them claim the last three legs to bring a respectable end to the contest and give them encouragement for the rest of the season. Rose & Crown 5 v Merthyr Football Club “B” 6. Both teams held throw in the triples legs with Kristian Dowd 98,100 & M. Lee 100 on form for the hosts in the second game. The fast maturing ( in other words old) Kevin Morgan & Alan Evans took the first pairs for the home side against the throw to put them ahead for the first time and then Phil Hughes 135 & S. Hughes held throw to beat S. Rees 100,121 & M. Harris to increase the lead to 3-1 before T. Harris & Simon Marks claimed the third pairs for the away side to leave them trailing by just one point going into the singles . P. Lewis 157 took the first singles leg for the home side beating R. Hughes and when Kristian Dowd made it 5-2 the Rose stood just one point away from winning the match but there was a shock in store as the away side produced an amazing comeback. Simon Marks beat Alan Evans to start the ball rolling and then further wins for S, Rees, T. Harris and I. Laing completely turned the tables as the Rose wilted leaving the away side relieved and surprised winners. Division Five Morlais Tavern “B” 3 v Silver Bullet 8. The triples legs gave no indication as to the final outcome of the match with both sides holding throw and Chris Davies & Anthony Morris held onto their darts in the first pairs to edge ahead at 2-1 and when Owain Pugh & Cael Howells broke throw in the second pairs leg to increase the lead to 3-1. Mike Davies & Gary Flye 67 out, 17 bull, then replied for the Tavern in the final pairs to see them trail by one point going into the singles. The Bullet fired nearly all the shots in the singles with Lee Birch 100,121,73 out shooting form the hip in the first game and further wins from Neil Winstone, Cael Howells 2x100, Chris Davies 100 and Owain Pugh taking the first five games to give the visitors a commanding 8-2 lead. Scott Phillips gained some consolation for the hosts with a fine win over Anthony Morris. Great Western Hotel 4 v Cardigan Arms 7. The “Cardi” made the long trip down to the Great Western and took a little time to settle as the home side broke throw in the first triples to go 1-0 up with Richard James 100 finding the target with Connor Clayton 100 & J. Phillips 105 in good shape for the away side. Mark Edwards 160 helped his side take the second triples again against the darts as the Cardi drew level heading into the pairs. Huw Meredith 100 & Richard James took the first pairs against the darts and then further wins for the pairings of Mike O’Neill/Neil Jones & Gareth Watkins/Nadine Jones saw the home side take all three pairs legs and with it a 4-1 lead going into the singles. If the home side had the better of the pairs then the visitors dominated the singles legs taking all six legs to turn the match and record a fine 7-4 win with Connor Clayton 100,124, A. Williams 100, S. Hitchings 135 and N. Price 2x100 all finding the target . Brunswick Hotel 4 v Llwyn-Yr –Eos Inn 7. The home side can count themselves a little unlucky in this match as they faced a highly experienced Llwyn side who will be looking for a successful campaign this time around, The Llwyn took both triples legs as their hosts struggled with their doubles and they went 3-0 up with D, Thomas & D. Day taking the pairs leg. Alex Lloyd & Luke Rudge got a point on the board for the home side by taking the second pairs but their joy was short lived as F. Murphy & J. Davies took the last pairs to make it 4-1 to the away side going into the singles matches. F. Murphy took the opening singles to increase the lead but then fine displays from Josh Bowcott and Tom Hughes pulled two legs back for the Brunswick. D, Day with a bull finish and L. Foley took legs nine and ten for the away side before Matthew Jones took the last leg for the home side. VERY IMPORTANT. Will teams in Division Four please note that the Gordon “L” have been expelled from the league so there will now be a bye in that Division. The Officers, Committee & Members of the Merthyr & District Darts League would like to wish Steve Phillips of the Merthyr Ex Club a safe & speedy recovery from his recent illness. Best Wishes & Get Well Soon from everyone connected with Merthyr Darts.
