Władysław Szpilman-Polish composer of Jewish descent. His story - TopicsExpress

Władysław Szpilman-Polish composer of Jewish descent. His story was a basis for Roman Polanskis film The Pianist. In his last interview Szpilman stated: - How much the Warsaw citizens helped hidden Jews? - Very much. Enormously. Poland is not an anti-Semitic country. People claiming opposite are conducting anti-Polish action and are spreading untruth. We should remember, that for rescuing Jews in the occupied Poland the penalty was death. Not everyone was ready for such risk-not everyone was a born hero. I was rescued by at least thirty Poles. At least thirty Poles risked their lives to save my life. One of my Polish Radio colleagues kept me in his elegant apartment for 10 days. A one year before the war ended, he was escorting me during an address change , from Narbutt Str. to Niepodleglosc Blvd at 7.30 a.m. I said-Let me go alone-I have no documents on me-we can perish together. He replied-No Sir,we will go together. I think, that you even have a greater chance to survive this war, than me. Some years later I learned that a one day before Warsaw Uprising he had been executed during a weapon purchase attempt. The deal between Wlasow Ukrainians (serving for the Third Reich) and Polish Underground was betrayed.Only than I learned, that my Radio co-worker was an AK army conspiration second lieutenant. polish-jewish-heritage.org/pol/listopad_szpilman.html
