The Libertarian Reading List For years, trust in government has been on the rapid decline, and with the recent revelations of government scandals, Americans are losing their faith in government now more than ever. Disillusioned with the political establishment, more and more Americans are dropping out of the two-party system in favor of third parties and are registering as independents. Among the recent growth of third parties is the Libertarian Party, the third largest political party in the country. Surveys show that more Americans are identifying as “libertarian,” with Cato revealing that 14 percent of Americans identify as “libertarian”; Gallup, 23 percent; and Zogby, between 59 to 44 percent. In the 2012 election, Libertarian presidential candidate Gary Johnson received over one million votes. And though their most prominent and vocal political figure, Ron Paul, has stepped down after 30 years in Congress, many of his followers have won seats in the House of Representatives, while his son, Rand Paul, continues to grow in favor and prominence within the media and his own party, as he is potentially vying for a presidential run in 2016. Despite their growing numbers and influence, libertarians remain on the political fringe in mainstream politics, as Americans are either unfamiliar with libertarianism or hold misconceptions about it, whether it’s through the political right dismissing libertarians as “pot-smoking hippies” or the political left berating them as “corporate shills.” The following is a list of articles, books, and videos that cover the core political philosophy, tenants, and positions of libertarianism. The purpose of this list is two-fold: first, to introduce non-libertarians to libertarianism so that they better under it; and, two, to educate libertarians on their own philosophy so that they can better defend it. By reading and viewing the material on this list, libertarians and non-libertarians alike should have a stronger grasp and better understanding of libertarianism. As Thomas Jefferson once wrote, “an educated citizenry is a vital requisite for our survival as a free people.” Only by educating ourselves and others can we better ensure that liberty survives for generations to come.
