Yaro boys: for anyone that has passed through a nigerian university in the north & stayed in the hostel , he/ she will understand what this means. Yaro boys are mostly children & teenager within school age but are out of school owing to the economic hardship and ignorance. They usually carry out chores for cash to those that are in need of their services especially those in girls hostels. Over time , alot of rumours are spread about the true nature of the services they render for some evil doers. Daily they come around & advertise their services & later on, engage in petty trade. In university of Jos, some of us have enjoyed their cheap groundnuts & sugar especially when the semester is at its peak. However what I want to share with you this day is the operation of these same set of people ; Yaro boys & the power they possess in university of maiduguri as shared by a friend. This boys overtime had emerce great power in the school such that they intimidate students , they are recognized & registered by the school administration , they have a recognized union , as though that is not enough , a time came when these same group of people took to the streets & stage an Aluta against what they called abuse of name ( yaro boys ). They demanded that henceforth they should be called Non Academic Students , & that any attempt to change that will lead to heavy consequences.hmmmmmmmm, wonders indeed shall never end...Big shout out to all the Yaro boys or Non academic students in nigerian university hostels , Learning would have been Far more Tedious without you guys in the hostels. I pray you all have a turn around in your Lives .
