Yeah. This comic pretty much sums up how I feel about people limiting screen time for their kids. We live our lives around screens. Its where we read, write, watch, learn, and communicate. Its like a parent in 1914 limiting BOOK TIME and RADIO TIME. No, this doesnt NOT mean kids can stare at TV all day. Theres a difference between allowing kids to have nothing but passive stimulation, and limiting their access to the most important device in their lives. Very little of what my kids see is passive. Its all information-dense, interactive, and frequently social. My daughter spends a couple of hours a day doing (really impressive) digital drawings while chatting with internet friends on Skype and also using Facebook and Tumblr and looking things up and watching how-to videos. Calling her computer a screen is like calling the cockpit of the space shuttle a chair. Its reductive to the point of absurdity. At the very least, kids should not spend more time riding the bus and sitting in the lunchroom than they spend with their screen. Forty-five minutes a day. Madness.
