Years ago I was at the Old Globe Theatre in rehearsal for The Real Thing on the main stage. A few weeks later before our opening, a new group of actors arrived to begin staging A Comedy of Errors for the outdoor theatre. Their director was Nicholas Martin. I was in love playing Annie, in love with Stoppards words and with our cast and director. It doesnt get much better than that. But I remember the actors in Comedy of Errors. They were laughing on the way to rehearsal, laughing all the time, and Nicky was at the center. They adored him, as you do that rare bird of director who is at once a leader yet one of you. One of them told me, We just play. Play on, Mr Martin. What an extraordinary life youve had. I like everything that happens in theatre, from the time you meet with your designers through opening night. -Nicholas Martin, 1938-2014
