Yes, our brains are wired to give greater clout to bad news and we - TopicsExpress

Yes, our brains are wired to give greater clout to bad news and we do not subconsciously store good news in our memories. We have to make it a point to save those. Writing it down in physical form helps so that we arent automatically sucked into the doldrums and depression carrying only a negative view of ourselves, others and institutions. Soldiering on in light of this negative bias without becoming pessimistic about the big picture requires conscious awareness and presence of mind as well as the ability to compos oneself. Lost arts that are happily seeing revival due to the simple fact that we, even with all our ingenuity and innovation, still allow negative attributes within ourselves to create negative outcomes in the world. I would hazard a guess that the reason we are not happy is because we are allowing ourselves to be distracted by creating gadgetry that a few of us can enjoy instead of focussing on solving problems that obviously exist and are affecting all of us in myriad ways. Our distractions have brought us many new and exciting things that make the lives of some easier, but as was stated using slightly different words in the clip, 20% poverty (and the behaviours cultivated as result) is still unacceptable. I am in no way negating that keeping a balance view is useful, in fact its necessary to stop ourselves from placing ineffective, knee-jerk measures to solve our real issues. What does concern me is that we oftentimes, through optimism, carry on with our lives provided the issue is not effecting us directly and do nothing toward placing a real solution for the benefit of the others that are suffering through. Between optimism and pessimism sits the reality. It would serve us far better in my view to focus on correcting the reality, no matter whether our attitude is positive or negative. Someone once said to me of their behaviours I pointed out to them that I found unacceptable, Well at least I dont beat you! and through that statement justified themselves in not changing. Well, at least poverty isnt 40%. The microcosm is played out in the macrocosm. This is my concern when I see clips such as this. They are sometimes used to allow ourselves to be lulled back to sleep until the issue shows up directly on our own doorsteps. ~ Shelly Hazzard
