Yesterday Rick Perry came to campus and Im still shaken by the epiphany that I go to school with some modern-day Nazis.....or you tell me. A room filled with Dartmouth Republicans had been relatively silent through the 15 minutes or so that Rick Perry tried to utter some sense out of himself. He mentions fracking, oil, trade with Canada and Mexico (a.k.a exploitation and abuse of the latter), and still silence. He makes his second point, first words being along the lines of strengthen the border, and the entire room roars in applause and cheers before hes even able to finish describing his methodology of using our men, money, and drones to secure the border. And this was my moment of utter realization at the kind of ill, pre-1850s mindsets that I call my peers. Gee, I thought, I didnt know Dartmouth-educated students (allegedly some of our countrys finest with great logic and reasoning skills) could be so excited about killing people. For if they agree with Perrys ideals of strengthening the border, they are agreeing with killing my people, who by no means of geography or alienation stop being their very own brothers and sisters. People will come so long as there is need back in their countries, regardless of the kind of security (or killing) methods that we have in place. If you think that more security will stop people from coming, look at the this years wave of migration, and at the trends over the last ten years during which weve strengthened this border. I believe its a frail investment of our American dollars, a waste to go beyond what we already have in place. But if the burning desire persists, Mr. Rick Perry, to avert miscegenation of the brown and white (or fear thereof), then invest that money into developing these countries whose people have fled, are fleeing, and will continue to flee without internal change......regardless of the behemoth you construct.
