Yesterday during class my instructor was showing us some gradient mesh work from notable graphic designers, one of which was a truly stunning portrait of the artists son. When my instructor pulled up the image, she said And heres one of an adorable Chinababy. The class went silent. My instructor just went on with her lecture, didnt even notice. Its always interesting to observe the casual racism that gets flung around, not even in the form of jokes. It seems some people just dont understand that its not okay to call the Hispanic workers outside Home Depot the Javiers or refer to an Asian baby as a Chinababy. (Both of those examples came from card-carrying Mormons and BYU enthusiasts, each over the age of 50.) Why is it so hard to learn and grow, to accept new norms and distance themselves from unbecoming words and attitudes?
