Yesterday has been one of the most tiring nights of our lives - - TopicsExpress

Yesterday has been one of the most tiring nights of our lives - hectic and full of tension and some drama too. As many of you know my brother in law, Dhanju, has been in a hospital ICU since his two wheeler, where he was the pillion rider, met with an accident exactly a month and one day ago....on 21st December night to be precise. We had just gone to sleep when Bhaskar was woken up by a call from the police informing him that his brothers had met with an accident and could he come there fast. They had been taken by onlookers to a local clinic for first aid. (Thank God for Nagpur people who witnessed and acted! Just didnt walk away bcoz they didnt want to get involved) As it turned out one of them was grievously injured and has been in the ICU since. Today morning, his wife and two daughters took the brave but inevitable step of transporting him to NY, USA by air ambulance flying via Delhi by Air India. This brother in law has his family in USA but has liked to spend time in Nagpur, where he just built a house. He had come back to Nagpur after being in US for 6-7 months...and within a few weeks met with his accident. Within a few days of his hospitalization his wife and two daughters few down from USA. For the most part of their stay, they lived with me. Watching them, i was really amazed and so touched. All three ladies are working women; the daughters are married and have their husbands in the US. But it was like they had forgotten about all else and were totally focused on their husband/father. They kept extending - and finally cancelling their return journey to their various home towns in USA. The girls often lived in the hospital 24 * 7, not caring for their food, not minding the pathetic loos and camping in a mosquito ridden corner of the waiting room. They did not want anyone else there, because they wanted to look in on their father the whole night, taking turns to do so. (One of the girls is a Doctor herself). They did not get much co operation from the hospital but on the converse were faulted for finding fault with nurses sleeping in the ICU, Doctors taking a chalta hai - alls OK attitude. Finally, when his condition was not improving much, they took the drastic decision to fly him all the way to the US by air ambulance. Now taking an unconscious patient who requires ventilation off and on, requires his BP monitored all the time from Nagpur to New York is a herculean task. It was Nagpur to Delhi via Raipur....almost 10 hours halt at Delhi, where they have shifted him to hospital which was supposed to be close to the airport but was a very bad road 30-40 mins away...and then again on Air India direct to New York. You cant even imagine how much all this is costing - its a fortune! All this has made me realize one thing again and again, which people, mostly MEN, dont seem to understand sometime..... when it comes to the test ONLY YOUR WIFE AND KIDS AND YOUR PARENTS ARE WITH YOU 100%. Not siblings- they are there with moral support and help, but their lives go on - not friends, not colleagues - it is ONLY your immediate family that will leave their lives aside, not worry about expenses but just fight for you with all theyve got. I fet like I was watching the mythological Sati Savitri who got her husband back from Yamdevta..e to life. Yes, they DO exist. Though they are my nieces, this is the first time i spent such a long time with them and i only wish it was in happier circumstances.....God be with them and they will be in my prayers till they reach NY safe and sound.
