Yesterday i passed by the labor department on the Pondfill to pick-up an application for an artist from Dutch Quarter, a talented individual who deserves a chance in life. They told me that the person has to come in himself. I think that many of our youngsters who went to study set their dreams realistically. But to encounter the disappointment that they are overqualified. Employers should still consider first-come -first serve. Meaning that the first applicant should get the job. Hopefully the first applicant will get a chance at trial period when he or she will prove to be able to learn and perform the task. Overqualified means that the person can handle the job and meets the demand of the job way over. Its like having electrical repair done in your home by an electrical engineer rather than an electrician. But the homeowner only expects to spend x amount for the job. If both the electrical engineer and the electrician are satisfied and charge the same amount, then they have equal chance of being accepted. it is difficult to say that in all instances the electrical engineer can do technical work better than the technician or electrician. Other factors play a role. Reputation, advertisement, fast response, courteousness, and past working relationship. All in all it balances out. In this case the electrician will be said that he is overqualified since the job may not have needed someone with such high educational background or degree. At present many youngsters of working age have returned to the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Anguilla, Statia, and Holland to find work there. Others have joined the police force and coast guards. Others have continued to sfurther their studies and prepared themselves for the job-market. At present the fastest hiring sector is the private security field, as well as construction. Other fields include entrepeneurial, computer-based marketing, and tourism related such as front-desk, auditors, waiters, chefs, and banking-related. For those willing to leave home, some cruise-ships are willing to hire foreigners on-board cruise-liners as well.. I have high hope for our artist to receive center-stage locally as well as abroad. On various ocassions i have suggested that our radio and promotion department should promote our artists abroad for cncerts and cultural exchanges, and for short or long-term contracts as coaches in foreign countries. Our election campaigns serves to showcase our ability to export political proganda materials to other countries. Entrepeneurs in our country can start up shop from home with a small investment. T-shirts and caps design with logos, flags, and other promotional materials for different ocassions. Imagine housewifes sewing patches and logos unto uniforms and carnivl costumes. In essence we need to contact our patent office to get started. My favorite example is RADIO SHACK which is known as TANDY established in the U.S.A. However, most people believe that all products sold at RADIO SHACK are American Made, however, 80% of the parts are made in other coutries and assembled in America. Local banks should give out loans to locals who want to invest in bottling and packaging industries. Nothing is stopping us from importing 100 pounds bags of beans and repackaging them in 2 pound bags for distribution to retail stores. Nothing is stopping us from bottling softdrinks and developing our refreshment industries,...and on and on.- JACINTO MOCK.
