Yesterday morning I woke at dawn to hear the breathy barking of impalas, a warning that lions were about and hunting, and sat up to see several elephants ambling towards a water hole below my banda and a hyena loping through the trees: all this as the new risen equatorial sun bathed the vast plateau of Laikipia in a golden light. Over the past nine days on our Flying Safari we journeyed from the Masai Mara Reserve up to the high dry plains below Mount Kenya. Mostly we were out of touch with the outside world. But no one cared, as we were so deeply into that other world and its astonishing profusion of wildlife. We encountered a ‘super herd’ of 300 elephants, watched 50 plus giraffes feeding at twilight and sat in our jeep amidst a pride of lions – males roaring, females calling their cubs. We gazed at leopards up trees, at cheetahs chasing down impala, at vast numbers of wildebeest, at rhino quietly grazing, and in turn were watched by curious zebra and a host of various gazelles. And we were on a cultural odyssey, walking in the bush with our Masai guides, tracking animals by their prints, learning about medical plants, visiting a school and a village. And here I am back in Nairobi and the world of internet, dealing with a hacked email account and looking forward to being in the wilds again when we leave on our 100 Miles for Elephants trek tomorrow…..
