Yesterday, the Jerusalem Municipal Council authorised a new settlement to be built in Sheikh Jarrah. It is a 9 story building meant to house a Yeshiva, in a Palestinian neighbourhood much in need of public buildings for education, health and culture. Aside from the known fact that this building is beyond the green line, and is legally a settlement, it will not serve any of the Palestinians living next to it, because it is a religious institution meant for orthodox Jews. You can notice Nir Barkats keen involvement in a decision which clearly has political and social repercussions on the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, but also on all of Jerusalem, and even, some may say, on the state of Israel.
