You can search the entire DSM, the bible of psychiatry, and try to find one such defining test for a diagnosis of any of the 300 so-called mental disorders, including the old standby, schizophrenia, and you’ll go begging. This does not, of course, mean that many people who are so diagnosed do not have very real - and often very serious - problems. But, as Rappoport contends, and as the late Dr. Thomas Szasz devoted a large part of his life to demonstrating - the veneer of scientific objectivity that the psychiatric profession ladles over their work is simply that - a veneer. It is not science, it is much closer to religion, laced with a large degree of careerist advocacy.
