You may not know that theres a volunteer group that supports the Public Library of Johnston County and Smithfield: The Friends of the Library. There are similar groups working for libraries wherever there is a library. Ive read the minutes back as far as they exist and have seen many familiar names who have done their time for this group and have accomplished many things. However, I have asked a lot of people what made them leave and the answer is always the same: nothing seemed to change, it was to hard to get things done and we were spinning our wheels. Things are different now. With a new Board of Trustees, the library is moving forward in ways that dont show yet and there is a desire for change in many areas. If you are interested in knowing more about the Friends of the Library, or you would like to be a member: the group meets once a month except in the summer--or if there is absolutely no reason to meet, we dont do heavy lifting, we do heavy thinking and brainstorming, we do a couple of fund raisers, but we have great help. Our new focus for fundraising is to increase the number of ebooks available to patrons, decide where to hang some artwork that has been donated to the library, continue finding artists to want to display their work in the back hall of the library which is now more of an art gallery than a long, boring hallway. Meeting time is somewhat negotiable if we can settle on a date that suits everyone--that might be the hardest thing to accomplish. Right now, we meet the first Tuesday of every month at 1:00 in the Board Room on the second floor. Think about it. We would love to hear your ideas.
