You may recall that back on August 13, we posted an #Onthisday 1814 to mark the beginning of the siege of Fort Erie in Canada. The siege was still underway #Onthisday 1814. The British had continued to move closer to the American-held fort, but rain and cold were taking their toll on the British troops. On September 17, the Americans left the fort, attacking British siege positions and capturing British cannons. Casualties on both sides were heavy, and the British general in charge realized that the siege could never succeed without losing many more men. The British withdrew, abandoning the siege on September 21, 1814. The Americans would finally blow up and abandon the fort in November and withdraw to the American side of Lake Erie.
