ZAMBIA OPEN 2014 UPDATE: IM GILLAN BWALYA IN SOLE LEADERSHIP!!! International Master Gillian Bwalya of Nkwazi Chess club has taken a sole leadership in the ongoing prestigious Zambia Open Chess Championship taking place at OYDC in Lusaka. IM Bwalya won 6 games and drew 1 game to amass 6.5pts after 7 rounds of the 11 rounds tournament. In joint 2nd position lie Red Arrows’ IM Stanley Chumfwa and FM Douglas Munenga with 6pts. IM Daniel Jere, IM Chitumbo Mwali and FM Andrew Kayonde have 5.5pts each. Eight players are on 5pts and these are Jackson Chansa, Linus Katebe, Darious Darius Mukonde, Leslie Chikuse, Midosantos Chola, Mangani Happy, Nyambe Maketo and Kabwe Timothy. Round 8 pairing sees FM Munenga Douglas face IM Bwalya Gillan on board 1 while IM Stanley Chumfwa and IM Chitumbo Mwali crush on board 2. Board 3 will rekindle the recent rivalry between FM Kayonde Andrew and IM Daniel Jere. The pair has met 3 times in competitive games under a month with FM Andrew winning 2 games and IM Daniel winning one. Having a bad tournament to his standards is IM Kelvin Chumfwa who has amassed 3.5pts after 7 rounds of play. Three rounds will be played on Saturday and the final round on Sunday.
