a search for fortitude several contending arguments are bothering electorate: what to make of professors reluctance to speak for oneself, stand for his professional ethics and values and say no, when he just kept quiet or said yes? Except Dr Radhakrishnan, No professor got so much adulation, respect and responsibility as Dr Singh, PM, and yet in the evening of his life, he just frittered it away, why? what more would he have wanted in his life? If he had stood his ground, what was the worse outcome, resignation, so what, would he not have created his place in history: he is honest, but is he? are we honest only when we dont take bribe but compromise with policy choices, institutional designs, bear with people in cabinet who dont deserve to be there? i agree that politics is an art of compromise, no body can be completely authentic or honest in politics as we know it. We saw some of the more honest ministers compromising on certain issues, such as Nanda, Dr K V Raghunath Reddy ( an impeccable record of personal integrity but he did compromise a bit during emergency), mohan dharia, and above all Lal bahadur Shastri, K R Ganesh, may be Antony ( personally honest but demolished defence preparedness in his anxiety to keep himself clean and assuming all others to be dirty), Atal Bihari Bajpeyi, undoubtedly personally honest but his son in law and some others might have benefitted from proximity to him, Jyoti Basu, ems namboodiripad, and one can go on. In gujarat, chief minister like Babu bhai J patel, amazing degree of honesty, simplicity and humility ......... how do we evaluate personal honesty and professional dishonesty, an issue that needs cool headed reflection, by all of us, in our own personal and professional lives country doesnt want trade off, at least no covert trade off. If we need to make trade off, let us make it explicitly, let PM tell us what were the compulsions which made him make so many covert compromises in the evening of his life. May be he should spend some time at place of his choice and write about the constraints in which he had to work, i dont agree with the ethical standards of sanjay baru and others who cant keep the integrity professional oath that they took while joining a position. But the issues i am raising are discussable even without making any reference to what he has written. pl dont react in haste, dont mock at people, think self-reflexively and then share your thoughts, we all have to face these tensions and challenges, and many of us buckle in much less severe circumstances
