africanancestry/home/ about two months ago, I sent the folks at african ancestry eight swabs of saliva, thrilled that for the very first time in over 30 years, I would finally know more about from where half of my ancestors arrived, what language they spoke, what food they ate, how the music they played sounded...and hopefully would begin to really understand what it meant to be broken so brutally away from home, forced to adopt a new identity, and live from that moment knowing that for the next several hundred years (forever from their perspective), everything they knew and loved would be lost. yesterday, my results arrived in the mail. my matrilineal dna sequence traces my african lineage back 500-2,000 years to the countries currently known as guinea-bissau, to the fula people, and sierra leone, to the mende people. now the fun begins. the first project Ill be working on for MCulturist is a research project, learning everything I can about these tribes, the impact of the slave trade on their communities, the geopolitics of guinea-bissau and sierra leone, and their food, music, language, dress, culture and identities. and someday very soon, I hope to visit these places, and meet the people who very well could be my distant cousins. and when its all said and done, I hope my path inspires other black americans to find their own, and in the process we can begin to make the african-american identity a whole one.
