.....and now...the rest of the story...... 2014 Veterans Day Tournament Lake Anna, Virginia The Inspiration The 2nd Annual Veterans Day tournament is history, but before I go into details, let me bend your ear a moment. Most of you that know me, know that I was never in the military (not for lack of trying though). That said, I try hard to not let our Veterans, Military, Wounded Men & Women and families go without recognition. This is why I started this tournament. Getting fishermen, friends, and service members together to enjoy and honor those that keep and have kept us safe and free, and it will always be MY way of paying back. The Family So…. to instill a little Patriotism and participation in this event, I summoned all four of my grand-kids to task. Molly, Maggie, Rachel, and Charlie all had a hand in drawing up paper plates in their best Patriotic themes to be used at registration for boat numbers. They also made up red, white and blue ribbons to signify that livewells had been checked. Job well done Team Dirt Jr. Crew. I also must thank my Son and partner for all these years….Lee. I will always be your “Netman” Son. Wouldn’t have it any other way. To my wife (Linda), and Lee’s wife (Rhoda), …..Thanks for letting us enjoy our “hobby”. The Event As is the case this time of year, there are a lot of foggy mornings at Lake Anna. This held true and boats did not blast off until 7:30 AM. 30 boats left in quick fashion. The fog lifted by about 8:30AM and the weather was near perfect. 23 of the 30 boats brought fish to the scales. The results have been previously posted, and you can see that Lake Anna held true to form and fishing was tough. The Veteran / Military members that entered totaled 19. Of the 19, 7 were Marines, 4 were Army, 4 were Navy, 2 were Coast Guard, 1 Air Force and 1 Air National Guard. There was a great mix of Retired, Reserve and Active Duty with 2 young men heading off to boot camp in just two weeks. The winning team of Matt Conners and Victor Dillard had 14.35 lbs. As the winning team, they got to select a Veteran Charity of their choice to donate 10% of the entry fees ($150). They chose the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Richmond, VA. Nice job guys. Special Thanks A few special people I would like to thank are: Colonel Brian Lindamood (Ret. Army) for a great opening speech and the spirit & thoughtfulness behind it. Dave Fauntleroy & Chris Craft at Fish Tales for hosting this event and taking care of us fishermen for all these years. Wayne Snow for taking pictures. You’re always there when you’re needed man. Mrs. Jim Whittman for baking 100+ muffins that were enjoyed by everyone….several times…..lol Sponsors / Donations To the other people that provided prizes for Veterans, I truly thank you for your help. Generously offering their support were….Tank Mosley of Bent Rods Guide Service, Kip Hall & Chris McCotter at McCotter’s Lake Anna Guide Service, John Hutchins Bass Fishing, Brian Barry at Va-Outdoors, and Jeff Heidig at Lake Anna Winery. Thank you fellas. The End I truly hope everyone enjoyed this event, as I look forward to making this an annual tournament every Veterans Day. I would appreciate any and all comments, suggestions, complaints, or ideas on how to make it the best way to Honor Our Heroes. In the meantime, thank a Veteran / Military member for their service.
