been waiting a while for this documentary and it was finally released recently. it deals (epic word choice) with the historic rise and fall of online poker and what lies ahead. in my opinion the documentary is very well done. it is very clean and clear in the narrative and discusses every facet i could think of, illustrating the storyline far better than i ever could explain on my own. the entire piece hit home pretty hard. at times i actually got pretty emotional watching, because for a long span of time this was the industry and lifestyle i had chosen for myself. at age 21 i was 100% certain i had found my niche in this world and i loved the game of poker to the full extent of my capacity. obviously, a portion of this sentiment still exists, and probably always will, no matter what i do with the bulk of my life. and this makes sense; while poker as a profession was somewhat handed to me by a combo of serendipitous timing and an inherently graced competitiveness, it was also taken away from me entirely against my will. the film also made good and strong reference to the ongoing legislative activity that spurned all the industry proceedings in the past few years and followed the characters throughout the peaks and valleys. two specific moments of the documentary resonated with me on a very intense level: one was when danielle andersen discusses how poker was a chance to work up from the bottom and tangibly, measurably become one of the very best at something. another time was when tony dunst contemplates the fact that his entire life originated from an initial $75 deposit investment, and that poker allows the individual to do whatever they want or need to at all times without having to compromise on their natural self, whether it be through time or actions. nobody knows the future of the industry. i tend to be more bullish than most, although i am not sure if it is fiscal logic or just wishful thinking that drives my optimism. it could just be that its given me so much in such short time that i just have trouble comprehending it ceasing to exist altogether as an actual universal possibility. the film is 100 minutes long and i dont expect any of you to watch it, but its good. since 99% of people will file this under "dgaf," ive bookmarked it about halfway through where it reaches a segment in which they demonstrate the thought process of a poker player mid hand. its a very cool clip, only like a minute long, and definitely worth a watch. youtu.be/yde2oNvSBM4?t=40m6s
