dont buy eastwoods hype....when i heard about how the movie ended, I thought it sounded a bit familiar. It was plagiarized. The climactic end to the movie is when he takes out a legendary enemy sniper that had been his nemesis for quite a while. In the end of the movie, kyle supposedly takes out The Butcher with a head shot as the butcher is laying a bead on him. Well, this really happened BUT IT WASNT KYLE! It was a marine sergeant, Byron Hancock. He had an encounter with a trained syrian in Hit Iraq where the syrian got away. Days after that encounter in which the syrian got away, Hancocks unit was moved to help out in the action in fellujah. After that, he was sent back in to help with a sniper that was taking his toll on soldiers and civilians alike, back in Hit. He figured the syrian out and that encounter played out almost like the scene in the movie, except that in real life the syrian got the shot off at about the same time but was a little low. Now, this lie isnt on kyle, it is on eastwood. Stupid people will go on with their lives thinking that kyle killed this evil syrian sniper, when in fact the kill goes to another. Kyle does refer to this sniper in his book but he says that he thinks another marine sniper got him. AND it wasnt a 2000 yard shot, it was a 600 yard shot. He would have been using an M-24 in a 7.62 NATO with and effective range of 800 yards. the scope is only effective out to just less than 1100. So no, he didnt lay a bead on ANYONE that far away. He would have had to do a hold over technique where he wouldnt have be able to use the mil dots on his scope, at best it would be an educates guesstamation. By the way, the longest confirmed kill with the system he used in the movie is 1367 yards (just short of 4 football fields short of a mile) held by an Army Sergeant serving in Ramadi in 2005. So, NO he does NOT hold the record for the longest kill shot. eastwood has stolen legitimate actions and assigned them to a lying teabagging fake-triot. Im glad he didnt try to make kyles kill shot go through the syrians scope killing him by shooting him through the eye, that really happened as well. That was a marine sniper in Vietnam named Carlos Hancock in which he was involved in another one of those duels between super-snipers with a sniper nicknamed the Cobra who was lethal and also had a high body count. He, like Byron Hancock who REALLY shot the syrian sniper in Iraq, spotted the cobra by the sun glinting off his scope but in this case, Hancock SHOT HIM THRU THE SCOPE! (Recounted at the 46:30 mark of the documentary Sniper: Inside The Crosshairs available on youtube). So american sniper does these men a great disservice while glorifying a lying blowhard, glory hound....
