finished reading The Bully Pulpit: Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and the Golden Age of Journalism by Doris Kearns Goodwin. Great book, great writer. Three stories in one. Roosevelt and Taft biography and a history of what we have come to call muckraking during the Progressive Age. Wraps up with the election of 1912. Three great progressive presidents running for the top spot. Wilson, of course, wins. A couple of things I noticed. I have known very little of Taft. I knew he was president and Chief Justice, but I never understood his commitment to the progressive movement. And I have always felt the election 1912 showed why one party does not want to be split. Roosevelt broke with the Republicans and the idea is he and Taft divided the Republican vote, enabling Wilson to win. I am not sure it is that simple. Had Teddy not run, much of his support would have gone to Wilson because Wilson was the more progressive of the two remaining candidates. Goodwin remains one of my favorite authors. And she writes big books.
