(MORE: Polar Vortex Facts and Myths) Current Wind Chills The combination of wind and cold air will lead to dangerous and potentially life-threatening wind chills as low as 50 below zero Wednesday morning over a large part of the Midwest. The wind chill in Flag Island, Minnesota, was already 39 below zero by 10 p.m. Tuesday. Unlike the arctic chill that ended 2014, this cold blast will bypass the West and plunge south and east, bringing below-freezing temperatures all the way to the Gulf Coast by Wednesday night. Forecast Wind Chills: Thursday Morning This is what it will feel like to exposed skin due to the combination of temperature and wind. Forecast: Coldest Temperatures of the Winter So Far This second round began Tuesday afternoon as cold northwest winds began blasting into the Northern Plains. This next shot of cold air will surge south and east, reaching the East Coast and South later Wednesday into Thursday. High temperatures are expected to be up to 35 degrees below average in parts of the Midwest on Wednesday. Chicago may set a record-cold daily high temperature for Jan. 7; that record is 3 degrees, set just last year. Thursday morning may break the Jan. 8 record low of 10 below zero in the Windy City. Chicago has not had a subzero high since January 6 of last year. (MORE: January 2014 Deep Freeze Recap) More subzero temperatures are also on the way for Minneapolis. The coldest temperature so far this season (prior to this week) has been 7 degrees below zero, but low temperatures plunged to 11 degrees below zero in the Twin Cities on Monday morning, and similar lows are expected again Wednesday morning. The Twin Cities may stay below zero all day Wednesday (midnight to midnight); 2014 had three such days, all in January. Since 1873, the Twin Cities have averaged four days of subzero highs each year, but climate change has reduced that figure to two days per year over the past three decades. A long stretch of below-freezing temperatures may be in store for New York City as well. As of this writing (Tuesday evening), our forecast has the Big Apple at or below freezing from now until around midday Sunday, though Fridays high could poke a little above 32. Boston dipped to its coldest reading so far this season, 15 degrees, early Tuesday morning and again late Tuesday evening. Lows may drop down to around zero in Boston for Thursday morning. (FORECAST: 10-Day Forecast Maps) Dangerous Wind Chills Gusty winds will accompany the cold temperatures as a strong area of high pressure builds in behind the clipper system. These gusty winds will make it feel even colder. Wind chill values are expected to be well below zero for much of the Midwest on Wednesday and Thursday mornings. The wind chills will be extremely dangerous in parts of the Midwest, especially Wednesday morning when feels-like temperatures could again flirt with 50 below zero in parts of Minnesota. Exposed skin can freeze within minutes in such conditions, and hypothermia is a serious concern for those spending long periods of time outdoors. (WATCH: Understanding Wind Chill) Wind chills Thursday morning are expected to be below zero virtually everywhere from Kansas to Delaware north to the Canadian border. Single-digit wind chills are expected deep into the South, including normally mild cities such as Atlanta. While the East Coast and South wont see wind chills as extreme as those in the Midwest, its still important to bundle up, even if driving. Keep in mind that if your car breaks down or you are involved in an accident, you could be exposed to the cold for some time while waiting for repairs or a tow truck. You may not need a hat and gloves if youre parking in a warm garage, but you dont want to be caught without them if your trip is sidelined by a breakdown. Thursday will also bring the coldest actual air temperatures for many, as lows will plunge into the single digits and teens for much of East, with subzero readings in the Midwest and interior New England. Setup for the second shot of cold air next week. How Long Will It Last and How Far South Will It Reach? The South wont miss out on the chill. The wintry chill will plunge all the way to the Gulf Coast, sending low temperatures into the 20s as far south as New Orleans and San Antonio by Thursday morning. Atlanta may see lows in the teens on Thursday morning and highs may only climb into the 30s on Wednesday and Thursday. The coldest temperature so far this season in Nashville has been 18 on Nov. 19. This will easily be beaten this week as lows dive into the single digits on Thursday morning. High temperatures wont even make it to 30 degrees midweek in Nashville. While much of the country was shivering to end 2014, warm temperature records were set in parts of Florida. But Floridians will also feel the chill by midweek. Highs Thursday will only be in the 50s and 60s for much of central Florida on Thursday, with highs in the 40s for northern Florida. (MORE: Floridas Record Warmth Mocks Rest of Cold U.S.) The cold air will also cause lake-effect snow to develop at times this week in the Great Lakes region. The brutal cold is not expected to last too terribly long. Temperatures will begin to moderate a bit by the weekend throughout much of the Midwest and East, but remain below average in parts of the Plains and Midwest into early next week. Some of our long-range guidance suggests a January thaw may be in the cards for at least part of the Plains and Midwest later next week. Setup for the two shots of cold air this week. Chill Has Already Arrived for Some The first cold blast moved in behind Winter Storm Frona and began in the Plains on Sunday, when highs were below freezing as far south as Amarillo, Texas. This blast spread east into the Midwest and Northeast on Monday. Practically all of North Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin started with subzero lows Monday morning, with 20s below zero in northern Minnesota. The nations low Monday was 29 below zero in the remote northern Minnesota hamlet of Togo. At such low temperatures, even a puff of wind is enough to send feels-like temperatures – or wind chills – plummeting. The airport at Grand Marais, Minnesota, reported a wind chill of -50 late Sunday night. Several other locations, including International Falls, Minnesota, and Rhinelander, Wisconsin, had wind chills in the 40s below zero Sunday evening and early Monday morning. (INTERACTIVE MAP: Current Temperatures) High temperatures Monday were some 25 degrees below average for parts of the Upper Midwest, even as temperatures continued climbing in many areas after sunset. Highs failed to rise above zero in Thief River Falls, Minnesota (-4), Rhinelander, Wisconsin (-3) and near Marquette, Michigan (0). The average high in Marquette for January 5 is 22 degrees. Much of the Northeast faced a nasty about-face in the weather after widespread highs in the 50s and 60s on Sunday. In Pittsburgh, where the 10 a.m. temperature was 60 degrees Sunday, the thermometer reading was just 18 at the same time Monday. (MORE: Expert Analysis | Winter Storm Central) Echoes of this first cold surge were still being felt Tuesday, especially in northern New England. Caribou, Maine, only reached an afternoon high of 2 below zero Tuesday, following a morning low of 15 below. Winter Storm Gorgon Winds Down; Lake-Effect Snow Takes Over Winter Storm Gorgon will exit stage right off the East Coast this afternoon and most of the snow associated with this system will end. (MORE: Winter Storm Gorgon Forecast) In its wake a westerly flow of arctic air will set up across the Great Lakes and bring another round of localized lake-effect snow to the region through Thursday. Next Clipper Poised to Race Across the Great Lakes Thursday Into Friday The next Clipper will take a track farther north than Gorgon and produce a swath of snow from Minnesota through Michigan to New England in the Thursday through Friday time frame. Right now, it looks like snowfall totals will be in a general 3 to 5 inch range. However, the air will be exceptionally cold and that could mean higher snowfall totals overall. Potential Wintry Mess in South This Weekend, Early Next Week With arctic air entrenched across the South as we head into the weekend and early next week, it will increase the potential for wintry weather. The individual model solutions show a lot of uncertainty so trying to pinpoint exact timing and location of the wintry precipitation is not possible at this time. We will need to monitor as we head into the latter part of the weekend.light rain diffrent parts of those arew western bc canada usa mexcio eastern canada 40% chance of light rain 1-3 inches of light rain heavy rain for vancouver bc canada southern mexcio southern new mexcio southern texas state southern florida state 60% heavy rain 3-6 inches of rain flooding more like lee vancouver bc canada washingtion state southern state winter snow storm for alaska state bc canada western alberta canada 4 great lake area wisconsin gary fort wayne indania northern ohio michigan state parts of ontario canada west virgina pa state ny state yupper eastern state quebec and eastern canada canada 6-20 inches of snow blowing and drifting snow visibilty be at 0 very dangerous drving and snow pack and whiteout and icy roads condition bizzard warning for nwt canada nu canada northern quebec canada 3-6 inches of snow blowing and drifting snow visibilty be at 0 very dangerous drving and snow pack whiteout and icy roads condition lake effect snow for 4 great lake area for wisconsin il state gary and fort wayne indania northern ohio state michigan state soo ste marie michigan state and soo ste marie ontario canada wawa whiteriver all way down parry sound huntvilles graveshurst orilla barrie grey bruce ontario canada southern ontario canada eastern ontario canada western pa state bufflao james town rochester watertown ny state eastern ontario canada 3-12 inches of snow blowing and drifting snow visibilty be at 0 very dangerous drving and snow pack and whiteout and icy roads condition snowfall for higher mountain or flatland area for alaska state yukon canada nwt canada nu canada western canada wy state montana state colorado nd and sd state western nebraska minnsota northern iowa all way eastern texas state 4 great lake area for indania ohio michigan state ontario canada west virgina northern virgina state maryland washington dc nc state pa state new england state ny state upper eastern state quebec and eastern canada 3-12 inches of snow blowing and drifting snow visibilty be at 0 very dangerous drving and snow pack and whiteout and icy roads condition frezzing rain warning for southern bc canada northwestern alberta canada southwestern alaska state 1-3 inches of frezzing rain very dangerous drving icy roads condition high wind warning for western alaska state nwt canada nu canada parts of western canada minnsota state upper mid western state all way western state all way down oklanhoma kansas nebraska state iowa missouri arkansas eastern sea broad state tn state ky state west virgina 4 great lake area il state michigan state ontario canada pa state ny state quebec canada eastern canada 17 or 33 up to 43 mph winds winds windchill warning for alaska state all way yukon canada nwt nu canada western canada minnsota state upper mid western state wy state colorado all way down texas southern kansas nebraska iowa all way down arkansas louisania southern state eastern sea broad state missouri 4 great lake area wisconsin il state indania ohio michigan state ontario canada western pa state ny state new england state upper eastern state quebec canada eastern canada windchill be at -50 or 0 very cold weather for yall frost warning for yukon canada all way nu canada western canada minnsota upper mid western state all way up ky state georiga state 4 great lake area wisconsin il state indania ohio michigan state ontario canada western oregon all way texas all way up missouri il indania ohio west virginand virgina maryland pa state ny st quebec canada black road icy condition very dangerous drving on icy bridge condition foggy or ice foggy for western canada washington state oregon idaho montana wy state all way down texas state southern state florida state upper mid western state minnsota 4 great lake area wisconsin michigan state ontario canada quebec canada all way eastern canada visibilty be at 0-2 miles very dangerous drving and foggy ore ice foggy condition right till by morning lift off by afternoon be caution keep eyes on it yalltune weather channel weather network wx cb radio scanner weather radio cell phone or desktop laptop tablet weather yall be safe drive safe god bless yall bigger both thumbs up drivers everybody else here :) 10-4
