Tribute to Kathak icon Pandit Chitresh Das 70-year-old Kathak icon Pandit Chitresh Das passed away due to an illness on Sunday, leaving behind a rich legacy of his dance schools in India and the US. Since 2003, Pandit Chitresh Das has worked closely with New Light. Pandit Chitresh Das and the teachers of Nritya Bharati taught the children of New Light, Kathak dance, as a means for cultural and self-awareness and empowerment. The New Light group was also invited by the Ministry of Culture and International Cooperation to be a part of Kinder Kulture Kravane; in 2008, the New Light children travelled to Germany for a 6-week performing tour. In Das’s teachings, he emphasised the concepts of ‘tyaag aur seva’ (sacrifice and selfless service). Das encouraged adopting the values of selflessness and sacrificing through his dance. New Light Kolkata remembers the legend - a dynamic personality and a vibrant dancer.
