he birthday of Carl Anderson, who was born in 1905 in New York City. Anderson studied physics and engineering at Caltech, where he remained for the rest of his professional life. In 1932 he used a cloud chamber to discover the electrons antiparticle, the positron. Four years later, he and his first graduate Seth Neddermeyer discovered the muon, a subatomic particle that has the same charge and spin as the electron but is 207 times more massive. Looking back at his career for an oral history project, Anderson told his interviewer: The ideal student would be one who was not working for grades but was working because he was interested in the work and not trying to compete with fellow students.
