The awareness that comes from art can lead to a better society if the people take action based on the ideals they discover in art.” - The Artwork of Jason H. Phillips Jason H. Phillips was born in Detroit, Michigan where his interest in art began at age 3. Early recognition of his talent led him to choose Cass Technical High Schools noted Commercial Art curriculum. He received numerous awards and scholarships from various local and national competitions along the way. In 1992, Phillips was selected as the Marie W. Sharpe Scholar at Colorado College, where he had the opportunity to study under renowned painters such as Charles Parness and Janet Fish. Phillips received an art scholarship and completed his Fine Arts BFA, in 1999, at Wayne State University. Phillips’ work has been exhibited in numerous galleries and public spaces throughout the United States. His work can also be found in private collections nationwide. Phillips’ works have been featured at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, the Johanson Charles Gallery in Detroit and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio. Jason has been featured in art publications such as “Connecting People with Art: Contemporary African-American Art” and “Hope: A Collection of Obama Posters and Prints”. He is a member of the National Conference of Artists. Jason H. Phillips has a strong interest in using his gifts for municipal institutions. He served 5 years designing for the City of Detroit’s Communications & Creative Services department and 2 years supervising the Wayne County Clerk’s On Demand Copy Center. Phillips was awarded the “Spirit of Detroit Award” in 1998 for his work with the community. He was also awarded a “Mayoral Proclamation” in 2002 for his achievement in the arts. Recently, Phillips served as a 2010 panelist for the Michigan Council of Arts. Currently, Phillips works as a full time artist in Detroit, Michigan. Phillips current work has become less surrealistic. Using traditional painting techniques, Phillips often reflects socio-political challenges of American urban life.
