https://youtube/watch?v=RQJit-0RDio Tumbler Ridge lights it up Trent Ernst, Editor A total of ten businesses and 13 residential houses were entered in the first-ever Tumbler Ridge Christmas Light up Contest, coordinated by Tumbler Ridge Chamber of Commerce and Success by 6 and sponsored by the District of Tumbler Ridge. As part of the contest, Success by 6 ran a series of bus tours to all 13 houses for community members, who then voted on their favourite houses. These votes were combined with the votes by the official judges, Colette Ernst (Success by 6), Tim Stewart (TR Library) and Carmen Drapeau (Chamber of Commerce- Visitor Centre) to come up with the winners in the contest. A total of 24 families, made up of 87 people, hopped on the Diversified bus. By far, the favourite house was the Cameron house (208 Cottonwood) which took the first place prize of $500. The Hurley House, at 147 Peace River Crescent took second place, while the third place prize went to the Torgeson household at 208 Spruce Avenue. The Lekei house at 184 Sukunka and the Peever house at 4 Palson Place get honourable mentions. For businesses, Black Gold Realty at 235 Front Street, suite 107 took first place, while upstairs in suite 209, LaPrairie Crane took second place and Canada Post next door took third. Action Play Café and Shop Easy foods came in fourth and fifth respectively. Colette Ernst is Success by 6 Coordinator for Tumbler Ridge. She says that 47 of the people on the bus were kids, and 28 of those were under six years of age. “It was a really good turnout, and a high percentage of kids, which was our intent,” she says. “People were really excited to judge. They had a really good time going out and looking at houses and judging them.” Ernst says there was a small fee ($5/family) for the bus tours, and they were able to raise $106. “Along with two other fundraisers this month, we now have enough funds to provide one new program for young children and their family in the new year,” she says. Ernst said this was an excellent first year for the contest. “We hope to be able to do this again. We had some suggestions for next year from the bus passengers on how to make the tour better. I’m really happy with the success of the tour. Many of the passengers were impressed with how much effort was put into the home decorations this year, and noticed there were a lot of beautifully-lit homes that had not entered the contest, so hopefully next year, there’s even more entrants.” If you didn’t catch the bus tour, there is still time to go take a drive or walk around Tumbler Ridge to see all of the beautiful displays.
