i hear a lot about Scotland getting new tax raising powers and would like to know why they are called tax raising powers, Will we have the power to lower taxes as well ? Of course we will so why are they being refferred to as tax raising all the time? (Danny Alexander called it that on the TV just now ) I am not a high paid employee (Domestic gas engineer) but i pay around 60% of what i earn to the government in various ways, Income tax, National Insurance , Community charge, Tax on my petrol, Vat on the things i buy etc. The No camp want to give us the power to raise more tax (Never heard of them being called Tax lowering powers) What good will these powers be if we get less money from Westminster (Barnett formula)? We will have to raise taxes in Scotland to cover things like Higher education and prescriptions etc or cut things. We will be paying the UK government for our share of Trident, Houses of Parliament, House of lords, HS2, etc I dont see how more powers to Scotland will benefit us unless we can make savings on the things i mentioned above. (by not paying to replace trident etc) In the event of a No vote we will have to pay for these things before higher education, Care and prescriptions etc and then have to raise tax to balance the books or cut services ? Apart from that we still dont know what tax raising powers we will be given How will these tax raising powers benefit Scotland more than making our own decisions on everything ?
