ift.tt/1tHHSen Refinery29 We may be well into fall at this point, but wed be lying if we said we had our seasonal wardrobe figured out. So, we thought wed turn to one top Bay Area-blogger to show us a thing or two about how fall style is really done. Youre probably familiar with Alicia Lunds fashion and design site Cheetah Is The New Black, especially if you share her penchant for elevated basics and layering. What you might not know is that Lund — formerly a New York-based online fashion editor for ELLE — recently opened a new store called Syllabus, where we can all shop her favorite pieces IRL. We paid Lund a visit to get the lowdown on everything from her go-to designers to her very best fall styling tip. Dont worry, we made sure to the scoop on her retail space, too. Okay, who wants to go shopping? Tell us more about your blog and how you first got into it. I started Cheetah is the New Black as a creative outlet back in 2009. I didnt read any blogs at the time, and I simply wanted a place to share my love for writing and fashion. From there, the blog grew into more of a personal style and lifestyle blog. Ive loved sharing bits of my life and style evolution with my dedicated readers over the years. Theyve been so supportive with every new step and avenue that I head down!IRO leather jacket and sandals; BONMOT tee; Citizens of Humanity Jeans How do you feel the landscape is different from when you first started? The blog world is incredibly — and overwhelmingly — saturated now. I think it can be hard to set yourself apart and really stand out if you dont have a unique point of view. With that said, it still proves to be a super-supportive community, and for that Im grateful! What do you think has made CITNB stand out from the rest? I think it stands out because Ive consciously tried to stay true to who I am and keep it as real and positive as possible. CITNB and myself have grown up and evolved over the years, and I think my readers have enjoyed the journey. Whats the one piece in your closet that gets the most mileage? Definitely my leather jacket and boyfriend jeans. Tell us more about your new shop! Thank you! Syllabus is a curated assortment of my favorite brands — like Lulu Frost, Catbird, A.L.C, DVF, Equipment — with a focus on quality basics and unique investment pieces. I wanted to bring a New York edge to my casual hometown. What inspired you to open a store, and how did you choose the location? When I moved back from the East Coast this past year, two men who run a popular mens clothing store in downtown Chico — my hometown — asked me to partner with them on their concept sister store. The Main Street location is the best part. It fits our vibe perfectly! The space has amazing bones. It has exposed beams and brick. But, it just needed a little remodeling.A.L.C. suit, Equipment tank. How would you describe your style? My style is classic with an edge.Jennifer Fisher necklace. We are obsessed with the design of the store. Did you do the interiors? Yes, I designed the entire space! I wanted the store to feel homey and reflect my personal decor and style. What is your one essential fall styling tip? If youre looking for two trends to incorporate in your fall and winter looks, Im loving a touch of pale pink and unexpected fringe on a bag or boots.BCBG Dress, Jennifer Fisher, and Catbird Necklaces. What other local stores do you admire? In S.F., I love The Perish Trust, Curve, Elizabeth Charles, and Cris. What are some of your favorite brands? I love Citizens of Humanity denim. IRO for leather jackets. The Lady & The Sailor tees. Jennifer Fisher and Catbird jewelry. And, I want to live in everything Isabel Marant makes. Also, Chloé and Céline for bags. Whats your philosophy when it comes to accessorizing? Since I gravitate toward classic pieces, I like to let statement pieces jazz up the simple basics. What are some dream brands you hope to carry in the shop? Id love to one day carry my personal favorite, Étoile Isabel Marant and Isabel Marant. Maybe if we open a second location!Whats one styling trick you can share? Alterations! Im petite, so I usually have to hem pants and take in my jackets. The slightest tailoring can make such a difference!OTTE blouse, Citizens of Humanity jeans, Isabel Marant boots. Who are your style icons? Taylor Tomasi Hill. Carine Roitfeld. The Olsens. What is your most treasured item? Currently, my Jennifer Fisher charm angel wing necklace, which was a gift from my guy.
