in case the government and NSA forgot... Privacy Act of 1974 The Privacy Act of 1974 applies to federal government agencies and its contractors. The Act specifies that personal information may be released only with an individual’s consent and after the individual has been allowed to review the information gathered about him and correct any errors. Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA) The ECPA was developed to protect wire, oral, and electronic communications while in transit. It also protects communication held in electronic storage, such as e-mail stored on computers. The Act prohibits the use of trap and trace devices to record dialing, routing, addressing, and signaling information used in transmitting wire or electronic communications without a search warrant.
