in case you missed this congo on Facebook hip hop moments.. dante ross responding to the claim from dinco d that he and lyor cohen broke up leaders of the new school….. Dimbaza Dumile I liked Charlie-Browns potential, as a rapper. Im not sure if the group breaking up meant that the remaining members couldnt formulate something of their own. 20 September at 16:58 · Like · 6 Frank Toro I hear more of these stories all the time..what couldve been..., blaming executives for downfalls....18 years later...why bring it up? most of the hip hop community from those years have moved on..... 20 September at 17:11 · Like · 3 Dimbaza Dumile Readers of this post seem to agree with my Charlie Brown comment. When Brand Nubian split (or, Puba went solo) the group continued on with Sadat X & Lord Jamar, even surprising skeptics with the club-hit Punks Jump Up. Brand Nubian (arguably) had more success than Puba, with that one Jam - but, Puba was fun to listen to as a solo artist. Anybody, back in those days would have thought Dinco & Charlie would have rode the momentum of Scenario / A Tribe Called Quest affiliation all the way into additional opportunities & success - and, the surviving members of Brand Nubian (seemingly having less commercial potential) would have relented to the bands split-up. You can never really call it. I dont even think executives could really pinpoint whats in the bag, for rappers who are on the brink of a career-shift. 20 September at 17:40 · Like · 2 André LeRoy Davis Why bring it up? Its called an interview. Hey if someone asks a question you answer it... No prob with that. 20 September at 17:41 · Unlike · 1 Dimbaza Dumile Its cool to bring it up (in an interview) this many years later -- and, I appreciate Dantes honesty in admitting a role in the coercion of the break-up plans. It still feels okay to hear the various opinions. 20 September at 17:44 · Unlike · 3 Rob Martinez Best Advice your ever gave 20 September at 18:08 · Like Jay Smooth seeing a lot of coded language about outside dudes lately, in a way that seems extra convenient 20 September at 18:24 · Like · 1 Jay Smooth (not that im against blaming stuff on white people as a general principle) 20 September at 18:24 · Like · 5 Dimbaza Dumile I wouldnt necessarily call Dante an outside white-guy meddling in affairs - he has a unique trained-eye for talent & peoples artistic potential (in my opinion), and I truly believe that there could be just as much Dante-praising as there has been Dante-bashing, over the years. RIP Chris Lighty was very much black, and also very influential - so, they come in all different shades. Busta Rhymes had an obvious energy that was unmatched, which made him an easy turn-key solo artist. However, if executives & behind the scenes decision-makers were to take a selective poll among hip-hop industry aficionados, about what they thought could potentially come out of a Leaders of the New School split-up; A lot of people would have said, theyd like to hear more from C-Brown. North Cacalaca? Cmon, whats that - North Cacalaca?? Everyone knows what it is now. People have just been always under the belief that there was/is more value to have gotten out of Charlie Brown, as a rapper from that period in Hip Hop Music. 20 September at 18:38 · Unlike · 2 Ahmir Khalib Thompson *raises hand* am I the only one who believes in you can come home again? As in Jordan didnt get those 6 rings by himself. I mean yeah I love cookies n cream ben and jerrys, but I love it in relation to what else I had that morning. So ice cream is a treat. Kinda like busta going last on Scenario it was something to look for. I would NOT love ice cream everyday/all day. Imagine 6am ice cream for breakfast, then lil cone at work for a snack. Then lunchtime a 2 pinter. Then go home w the fellas grab an ice cream. Then you get home and blamo more ice cream. Now repeat over and over and over and over. What happens to your teeth in 11 years? Or your organs and weight? I cream is a tasty treat but now its turned on you. And now youve had 6 root canals and you gained 60 poun----whoops strike that they chopped your foot off from diabetes. See where Im going? I know there is conflict in a group scenario (Im literally in the last group that had a major label contract deal in black music) but I hate that labels discouraged groups in the name of its easier to deal with one dude instead of 4 20 September at 18:44 · Unlike · 4 Tony York Busta was most peoples favorite out of the group. (Thats obvious) Dante told him right. But there was also the inner-tension that Busta had with Charlie Brown long before they got their first deal. Miller Its the age old adage, they control something when in fact were talking about a space and time when artist where is gullible and egomaniacal as they are now even. Broad strokes later and truth be told I managed to have a career modeled after the likes of Dante Ross. Since I wasnt trying to be a rapper I chose to find talent and help business for those that could. We made mistakes (executives) - they (artist) made mistakes at the end of the day the business was born out of music made. I can name a handful of same problems from NWA, Pharcyde, etc. Groups broke up because members wanted to go solo when in fact they never needed to break up, 20/20 hindsight and some years later we now know this unfortunately there are no groups worth it now. But this is a great conversation and I kind a like the article too. I enjoy hearing about our history from every angle I believe we get the full circle that way. 20 September at 18:55 · Unlike · 4 Andrew Mason ...and that Nonce song is playing in my head... 20 September at 19:02 · Like · 1 Andrew Mason C-Brown tried some solo stuff w/ Johnny Juice Rosado that I thought was dope (and supported on the radio) but it was probably too little, too late. 20 September at 19:03 · Like · 1 Dante Ross Its all my fault Busta became a superstar and ya know Im ok with that. So with or without label interference its something thats going to mentally affect a group. The other angle is once youve established a soloist career within a group it then makes the group harder to function as a yearly living entity. (ie Wu-Tang). You now have to worry about everyones individual schedules which from my experience has never made the group situation work (well). 20 September at 19:21 · Unlike · 9 Henry Alexander III I give you credit for helping expose many of the artists who were my life soundtrack. (lol) -- Its okay Dante, I know that a lot of it was art-work & maybe other factors, but Im gonna be truthful; Had everything went smooth with Elektra, and the 2nd album would have come out without a hitch - DJ Subroc would have went on to become a Producer of other hip-hop artists with his tracks (because he was always networking & building friendships with artists), which would have forced MF Doom to go solo, because we would have basically have persuaded him to take the plunge & do it on his own -- not even knowing how the label would have viewed this, or if the label would have preferred that we stay together. Thats how I seen things unfolding in my household. My brothers have individual talents, and although there was no tension between them, the obvious course-of-action would have been a dissolving of KMD, in some sense, on their own terms, into solo opportunities. 20 September at 19:30 · Unlike · 2 Jeff Adams #history 20 September at 19:39 · Like HowNosm Ral Yo! Especially when youre as young as LONS was. The people at the office just facilitate it. Your boys and the girl youre dealing with are the first to plant those seeds. And Busta was splitting time between Bklyn and Uniondale when the group formed, so he also couldve had a different social circle than Dinco, Charlie and Milo. Thats another issue that put the problems into play long before any encouragement from inside the operation. 20 September at 21:09 · Edited · Unlike · 2 Steve Brock The better advice would have been individual solo albums, almost identically packaged like Kiss. 20 September at 21:14 · Like · 3 Mauricette Caruana Youre right. 20 September at 22:24 · Like Justin Tyme Prager I didnt know any of the LONS members personally, but the few times that I met and/or interviewed them back in the day around the release of their TIME album, you could definitely feel the extreme bad vibes and jealousy that Charlie had towards Busta. In Dantes defense, it really had nothing to do with him, Lyor, the label, or anyone outside of the group, at least from what I saw. Busta was the standout member from the jump, long before Scenario hit. Dinco and Milo embraced it, while Charlie wanted to disgrace it. Charlie was and still is a stellar MC and Im sure he has learned a lot since then, given he was just a kid when all of this went down... On a side note, I would love to see LONS, Brand Nubian, and KMD (sans Subroc-RIP) do something special next year to commemorate the 25th anniversary (all three popped off around 1990) of the launch of each groups career. 20 September at 22:34 · Unlike · 2 Dante Ross KMD were victims of bougie people misinterpeting there artwork. I fought and almost lost my job defending the 2nd record. Ask Terri Rossi and about what happened. She started the shit storm the ended there relationship with the label. Sub had already passed by the way. That whole ordeal made me look at the music game with a much more cynical pair of eyes. As for Dinco man he needs to look at the relationship between Brown and Busta for his answers. Why would u stay married to a pain in the ass when you can prosper by yourself in a more self empowered and ultimately more positive situation. 20 September at 23:10 · Unlike · 5 Michael Brigante Dincos creepily thin facial hair should be blamed. 20 September at 23:12 · Like Karen Rait Hey dante didnt you also break up the Beatles! Yesterday at 15:22 · Like Dimbaza Dumile soundcloud/your-old-droog You broke up the Stretch & Bobbito 89.9 WKCR Show, Dante? (lol) If any #rapper is Rapping and Singing as ubiquitous as this NAS impostor (Your Old Droog) at any given time in their career, theyre gonna generally be well-received, and can maintain a #solo career - No matter if youre Dinco D, Charlie Brown, or any rapper still #writing. Rapping in this type of style has become (some what) the new-standard for rappers who pride themselves on Writing & Rhyming - and, can add value to the career of any rapper looking to remain valid. If it were up to top-rappers/writers like NAS; thisll be the only flavor of Ben & Jerrys Ice Cream available, Ahmir. Hes rapping very comfortably, hes rapping in cadence with the instruments, and even acknowledged the band in his verse, too - these are very complete #music tracks. By the way, Im obviously convinced that this album is a #NAS alter-ego rap-persona.
