in the Lampasas Dispatch Record today: LCHEC offers non-credit fall classes The Lampasas County Higher Education Center is registering for a range of non-credit courses, including: Basic Spanish Conversation (Spanish Conversation 1) emphasizes oral communication in a variety of topics at a basic level. It is intended for students with no previous knowledge of the Spanish language. Cost is $50 for LCHEC members and $60 for non-members. Class meets Tuesdays, Sept. 17 to Nov. 5 from 6-7:30 p.m. Continuing Basic Spanish Conversation (Spanish Conversation 2): is a continuation of Basic Spanish Conversation for those with little or no previous background in the language. No prerequisite is required. Grammar will be a minimal part of the instruction. Topics will include a review of Basic Spanish Conversation (Spanish Conversation 1); shopping, travel and emergencies; presentand past-tense conversation; culture; and others as determined by student interest. Cost is $50 for LCHEC members and $50 for others. A textbook is $10, payable to instructor. Class meets each Thursday, Sept. 19 to Oct. 31, 6-7:30 p.m. Basic French will introduce participants to basic language skills necessary to navigate a city such as Paris. The introductory course is intended to assist those who may to travel to a French-speaking country, but also will be useful to those seeking an introduction to the language. Lecture, languageskills practice, tapes, the Internet and games will be used to facilitate learning. Broad areas to be addressed are greetings, asking and giving directions, ordering in a restaurant, telling time, clothing, family, at the bank, and at the hotel. Cost is $50 for LCHEC members and $50 for non-members. Class meets each Thursday, Sept. 19 to Nov. 7, 6-8 p.m. Basic Internet and Email class is Sept. 20 from 1-5 p.m. Cost is $30 for LCHEC members and $40 for others. Introduction to Earth Sciences prepares students for the rigor of college-level earth sciences, and introduces the student to the sciences of geology, meteorology, oceanography and astronomy. The course also is helpful for anyone seeking work in an earth sciences field -- including the oil and gas industry. Class meets Oct. 11 to Nov. 23 as follows: Fridays from 6-8:30 p.m., and Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Cost is $225 for tuition. A required textbook is additional. The course is not for credit, and is open to the general public. Beginning and Intermediate Algebra will provide a solid foundation in algebra and help students develop problem-solving skills to give them the resources necessary in their next mathematical and non-mathematical courses. The course will help students pass the math portion of the college placement exam. Class meets Mondays and Wednesdays from 6-8 p.m., Oct. 7 to Nov. 27. Cost is $250. Students will need to purchase paper for notes and problem solving, as well as a solar-powered “four function” calculator (less than $10). Used coies of an optional textbook, “Beginning & Intermediate Algebra” (ISBN 0-13-144442-5) are available on the Internet. Private Pilot Ground School introduces students to the topics required for pilot certification and serves to help prepare them for the FAA knowledge test required for private pilot certification. Class is Oct. 7 to Nov. 25, each Monday and Wednesday (except for Veterans Day) from 6-8:30 p.m. Cost is $350 for tuition and textbook.
