jews as far as the eye can see. beach jews, but jews. warning: this is long. but interesting. lol. i LOVE and HONOR my daughter, cantor stacey abigail morse, of course. and... A huge 5,000-year-old monumental structure was found in Israel (9.25.14 news) – … and yesterday, at rosh hashana services here in so ro/ca, stacey (my daughter, the cantor - lol) introduced a first 3,000 yr old service for the temple (Temple Menorah) - the first duchanen service on the bimah in the synagogues 65 year-old HIS(haha)story. It is of the places of the levite and kohen tribes, dating back to the time of aaron, 3000 years ago... the levites (steve is one - but looks good for his age) wash the hands of the kohens; the levites then step down from the bimah, the kohens lift their tallits over their heads, covering their faces, and the congregation turns away - not to look at them. (see the article from brandeis student, below - feminist) a) my daughter (well, steve’s, too) was incredible – she dahvened with a brilliant voice, personal warmth and sincerity, invoking a quiet, and laughter and meaningfulness. I am so proud of her. also a brandeis grad (plus a few grad degrees), she is life... And I love her for bringing her FATHER to tears more than a few times during the 4-hour service. he was awed. and these ARE the days of awe - rosh hashana. b) the (first day) services were followed at sundown by tashlich services in manhattan beach/ca, gathering three synagogues – reform (where stace ‘cantors’), conservative (which steve and I co-founded) and chabad (definitely did not start THAT one – lol). it is the same pier which my bff and neighbor, childrens WONDERFUL author april wayland wrote and delightfully illustrated in a precious children’s book (tashlich: throwing bread crumbs, representing our sins of the past year into the ocean, while nourishing the life within). c) my son (well, steve’s, too, lol) was the shofar – ram’s horn – musician for the temple – he blew the last, long blast at the temple for 46 seconds – but I used my racing time clock (for he and my grandson’s racing times) on the pier and he clocked in 1:04 !!! two seconds off his best, he said. Amazing – and with the low register of the huge shofar which we bought him last year for his starring role in a play of life and death at the temple – in which our younger grandson also acted. This is long, and there’s so much for which I am grateful this year – and sad – but wanted to share with those of you who have read down to the bottom here – which is the beginning, after all *L* Rosh (means head, or beginning); ha’shanah (year), so: l’shanah tovah to us all – a honey-sweet fresh, beginning and ps: i will not be testing anyone on contents herein. lol and love – here is the delicious article from another student at brandeis: blogs.brandeis.edu/freshideasfromhbi/the-bat-kohen-between-holiness-and-marginality/
