#midnightstory STENCH by Janrae / Fuurinkazan I finally got the chance to see where he lives. Crisanto has been my boyfriend for the past four years, but only now will I be able to see his house. It is a good sign when your man finally shows you where he lives. It means he’s already open for greater issues, such as marriage. The house was big, clean and well painted. I wondered how he manages to clean such. He said it was his late father’s gift to him on his 26th birthday. Everything went fine, he showed me the rooms, the paintings on the wall, his Gundam collection and even a few books written by Janrae, a Filipino author. I am a big fan of him. However, when he went to buy us a drink and some snacks, it is when I felt something strange on the house. I was on the kitchen when I heard the sound of a dog screaming and whining. It was not the sound of a dog longing for his or her master, but pain. Then I felt a chill that passed through my core. I thought it was ridiculous as to Crisanto never had any pets. I shook my head and went back to the sofa. I suddenly heard cat screams and scratching on the wall. They were soft and weak at first but it became louder and louder, as if a stereo is being adjusted to a higher volume continuously. I covered my ears and pleaded to the nothingness for it to stop. “Stop it!” I screamed. The cat screams stopped but suddenly, I was able to detect a foul stench over the sofa. I looked at the sofa and there I saw something I thought could be my imagination. A dead cat covered in blood. There were cuts around its body, small stab wounds and some knitting pins on its eyes. I closed my eyes hoping it was just me. I opened my eyes again and I was right. Perhaps it was my imagination. I stood up in the sofa and calmed myself. There, I noticed a full size mirror. I stood in front of it and there I finally realized what really was going on. Call it my imagination or I am just a freak. I saw Crisanto on the mirror instead of myself. He was holding a small bloody knife. I can smell that foul stench again. It was a few minutes later when Crisanto came back. I was silent and looked him with a puzzled eye. He was wondering what’s gotten into me. “Cristanto, where’s your cat?” I asked. His happy face turned pale and his eyes were like that of a dead fish. After that day, I decided not to see Cristanto again.
