...when we were very young, on Halloween we littles were sometimes offered along with candy the most interesting (but not always wished-for) things - a free dance lesson from the dance studio - a toothbrush/ toothpaste and lecture from the dentist down the street - the offer of a free parakeet from the bird lady (Daddy went back and got me one for my birthday) - but the best was a nickle or dime each from the grumpy neighbor who said it could have been candied apples but wed stolen all of his off his tree - in return we recited the very long shaggy dog story of Pete and his brother Repeat - people gave us extra goodies just to shut up and go away...
