It is narrated from Abdullah ibn Mas’ud [RA] that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said, “Whoever recites a letter from the book of Allah will earn a good deed because of it; good deeds are multiplied by ten. I don’t say that Alif Laam Meem is a letter, but rather Alif is a letter and Laam is a letter and Meem is a letter.” [Reported by Imam Bukhari, Tirmidhi and graded authentic by Sh. Al-Albani] Vocabulary from the Hadith قَرَأَ – to read. حَرْفٌ – a letter. حَسَنَةٌ – a good deed. Lessons from the Hadith - Allamah Mubarakpuri comments, “The promised multiplication of rewards by ten is the least level of multiplication and in fact, a person could be rewarded multifold. This is because of the statement of Allah, “Whoever comes [on the Day of Judgement] with a good deed will have ten times the like thereof [to his credit]” and the statement of Allah, “And Allah multiplies for whoever He wills”.” - The hadith also highlights to us the enormous bounty that is the Qur’an that every letter earns such high rewards. These rewards are even more numerous in the month of the Qur’an.
