The Dutch musician with Turkish roots is not only a gifted singer and piano-player, but also a composer, arranger and lyricist. From early age Karsu performs on many local and international stages, including the renowned Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the North Sea Jazz Festival, the Istanbul Jazz Festival and – twice – at the legendary Carnegie Hall in New York. In 2012 she released her debut-album ‘Confession’. Karsu is now touring and when she’s not performing she works on new material. From very early age is it clear that Karsu has music running through her veins. As a child, she is already fascinated by piano-music. “I saw these pianists on TV with long, flowing hair, these Einstein-like types – I thought they were really cool and I loved the melodies they were playing,” is how Karsu explains her love for this particular musical instrument. At the age of 7 she gets her own piano and immediately starts taking lessons. It doesn’t take long before she masters classical pieces of Chopin, Mozart, Bach and Beethoven, which she plays in addition to traditional Turkish songs and modern jazz songs. She picks up singing more or less accidentally when she takes part in a schoolcontest. Karsu’s voice turns out to be really distinguished for such a young girl: she sounds mature, inspired and powerful. Close your eyes and you’ll have the impression that you’re listening to a ‘Big old jazz mama’ from New Orleans. At fourteen, Karsu starts performing in public, at her fathers’ restaurant Kilim in Amsterdam. Both small and large stages follow. More and more people, as well as newspapers, magazines and tv-shows, notice her unusual talent. The Netherlands-American Community Trust invites Karsu to perform at Carnegie Hall, New York. Dutch media pick up on this: Karsu is the subject of numerous articles and she becomes a regular guest in prime time tv-shows. Other countries follow suit. Karsu is invited to perform in more than twelve countries, such as Indonesia, Germany, Belgium, Suriname, Great Brittan and Turkey. Her first musical tour in 2011-2012 turns out to be a big success: the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam is sold out. Turkish media notice Karsu’s talent and she’s invited to perform at one of the most popular TV-shows ‘Seffaf Oda’, with presenter Guneri Givaoglu. Since then Karsu travels frequently to Turkey to perform in (jazz)festivals. Karsu’s album ‘Confession’, which was released in 2012, is a delight for those who like jazzy/poppy sounds. Like on her first live recording CD ‘Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ’ Karsu mixes jazz, blues, funk and ethnic influences. On ‘Confession’, which was recorded in a studio, Karsu prefers a lighter version of jazz with a touch of pop and Turkish influences. Her repertoire has become more cheerful and her songs more mature. With her beautifull voice, her extraordinary pianoplaying and her remarkable compositions, mixed with her stunning appearance and joyful attitude, Karsu proves herself to be one of the most interesting, international jazz-stars of her generation. This young woman really knows how to enchant every audience. https://youtube/watch?v=afPI4C6qORs&feature=share
