Reverse boycott helps Sangrur dalits win equality battle Amaninder Sharma,TNN | Sep 9, 2014, 09.01 AM IST SANGRUR: Dalits in a village in Sangrur district of Punjab have turned an age-old barbaric tradition of social boycotts by upper caste members on its head by announcing their own boycott of their tormentors. Dalits of Namol village had been facing a social boycott for some time after they refused to become proxy bidders to upper caste members in the lease auction of government land for farming. In response they refused to work in the fields and in houses of the upper caste members, forcing the police to intervene and resolve the issue. The state government gives out agricultural land on rent to farmers after an annual auction. A third of the land is reserved for dalits but they often dont have the financial resources to bid and are then used as proxy by upper caste farmers. In a population of 2,000, Namol has about 600 dalits. In a sign of increasing assertiveness among dalits in some parts of Punjab, they have started refusing to become proxy. Namols annual auction had been cancelled seven times in the past five months after dalits alleged proxy bidding apparently in connivance with government officials. This upset upper caste members who allegedly gave a boycott on Friday and dalits in turn refused to work as farm labourers and domestic help for the upper castes. Jagseer Singh, one of the leaders of the dalits, said, Our families insisted that they wont cooperate with the upper caste community until they took back the boycott call. Dalits relented on Sunday, only after the police warned upper caste members of taking strict action if they didnt resolve the issue amicably. The only other instance I remember where dalits asserted themselves was Babri village in Tarn Taran in 2011, but the protest failed, says Jatinder Singh, assistant professor, department of political science at Punjabi University. Reverse boycott signifies that social and economic dependence of dalits on the upper caste is decreasing. This is happening more in villages located near urban centres, where dalits have other job avenues. Moreover, most of these agitations are led by young, educated dalits, who are more assertive than their forefathers. Sanjeev Mintu, president of the Zamaan Prapati Sangharsh Committee, added, Since the village is located near two towns ? Sunam and Sangrur ? and several brick kilns are located near the village, dalits are not economically dependent on rich peasants. Therefore, they dared to announce their own boycott. Rajesh Bagha, chairman of the Punjab Scheduled Castes Commission said, This is a good beginning. This is a lesson in how dalits can assert themselves and decrease incidence of social boycott.
